On April 28th, 2016, the California Reinvestment Coalition celebrated our 30th anniversary at our annual Celebrate California Reinvestment event in Oakland, California.
Each year, CRC honors community reinvestment heroes. We were especially excited this year to honor one of CRC’s founding board members, Gail Hillebrand, and two organizations who are taking the displacement crisis in the Bay Area head on: Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) and the San Francisco Community Land Trust (SFCLT).
Gail was honored for her long history of advocacy on behalf of consumers, including her work founding CRC and serving as a board member. She later worked at Consumers Union and is currently the Associate Director of Consumer Education and Engagement at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
MEDA and SFCLT were honored for their hard work to purchase five multi-unit apartment buildings in San Francisco, preserving affordable housing for 13 low-income households who were at risk for Ellis Act evictions. Financing from the San Francisco City and County’s Small Sites program and a loan from First Republic Bank helped to keep these tenants in their home and the affordable housing in community control.
CRC extends our gratitude to the many attendees and sponsors of the event! If you’d like to learn about our upcoming Celebrate Reinvestment events in Sacramento and Los Angeles, please contact Operations Manager Jessica Escobar (jescobar AT calreinvest DOT org).
